SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW!

Of course on the day I decide to write this post it is a balmy 65 degrees out here in Richmond, VA. But also, we just got back last week from skiing in multiple blizzards in Colorado. And in typical me fashion, I am just now getting around to unpacking our bags. SO, Olive’s laundry is fresh on my mind and I thought I would come on here to share some thoughts about dressing your toddler for the snow  

Olive is 18 months and wearing somewhere between 12 m and 2 T clothes so we brought a couple of options with us on our recent ski trip to Colorado! I found a waterproof snowsuit from H&M that was SO cute and what I thought was a great price. It ended up running pretty big, but Olive was still able to walk in it so it worked fine.  It most definitely kept her warm.  We also decided to get a pair of snow bibs to go along with her winter North Face and she wore those as well!

I will say that the one piece is definitely a little easier because its, well, one piece! But if you don’t want to spend extra money and already have a waterproof winter coat – the bibs were significantly cheaper! I bought her a cute little pink pair from Amazon that did the trick just fine, and bought her a pair of pink boots *with the furrrr* from amazon too. I was shocked at how waterproof and durable they were. She wore them out in thes now everyday and they never got wet. Recommend 10/10 !!  

Under both the snowsuit and the bibs / jacket, she wore a little matching set made from thick cotton, as well as an undershirt /onesie. It was really cold while we were there, but that was plenty of layers underneath the snow gear. You definitely don’t want them getting overheated. 

I would suggest getting larger sized mittens that you can just pull up over their arms if they are like Olive and not used to having gloves on. She kept flapping them off and it definitely would have helped to have a larger size. 

Olive’s winter coat is North Face and SO cute. Comes in a couple different patterns that are reversible. We decided to size up so it will fit her for a couple seasons.   We also brought a couple pairs of Babiators with us because it can be REAL bright out in the snow. Plus, how cute do they look? They’re protecting her little eyes too. A must, honestly.

We went with the classic red stripes this year in order to get more longevity and wear out of them, but don’t get me wrong I am swooning over the prints too! Below I am wearing them when John and I had our wine & Christmas cards night a few days ago!

OK OK, I can’t believe it has taken me this long to write this post. Oh, wait, yes I can because it takes me forever to do anything these days

I pretty much picked out the Gucci Diaper bag the second I found out we had a viable embryo. Instead of getting any new handbags for a few years, I figured I would opt for the Gucci Diaper bag instead. Afterall, you don’t really carry a purse AND a diaper bag. ( I wasn’t actually sure this would actually be the case, but it really is, I only use the diaper bag.) So, basically, the price tag seems steep for a diaper bag, but legit for a designer bag. End of statement.

SO, I know you are on the edges of your seats wanting to know if the bag is worth it. How big is it? How much does it hold? Does it have the right pockets? I have made videos so you can see inside and see what I keep in it, don’t worry.

And, YES. I think it is worth it.

In case you didn’t want to watch the unboxing video here’s the deal. It has one big inside pocket, two smaller pockets, a changing mat, two outside pockets and one back pocket. Lots of pockets. Lots of space. But not TOO much space that you will be able to accumulate TOOOO much junk.

It fits perfectly under the stroller as you can see below, and I honestly thing overall it is the perfect size. The canvas is easy to wipe off and so far, after 10 months carrying it everyday it is still in pristine condition. I know I have friends who have gotten some of the trendier diaper bags and after 10 months they look like an absolute hot mess. I think you truly get what you pay for!

Pretty much the only time we do not use this diaper bag is when we travel, because a backpack is easier for that. (We use the Pottery Barn backpack which is Johns dad bag!) Overall, we loveeee our Gucci Diaper bag and I would choose it again and again and again.

To say we are lucky to have such great luxury vacation options in Virginia would be an understatement.

Having littles makes traveling a little more *complicated* so it is really nice to have options close to home where we can hop in the car and feel like we are on vacation just an hour away from our own front doors. We recently got to stay at Keswick Hall to kick off Spring Break and it was such a lovely, relaxing, time.

Located just a few miles outside of Charlottesville, surrounded by horse farms, a beautiful golf course, wineries and more, Keswick is beautiful destination. It has a boutique hotel and luxury feel all at once. On top of all of that, it is home to Marigold, a Jean-Georges restaurant which makes it a destination in and of itself.

THE ROOMS

Decorated with delightfully modern yet classic decor and the comfiest beds, the rooms at Keswick are divine. Take it from me that you should book a balcony room. Have your in-room dining or breakfast coffee and pastries out on the balcony overlooking the property and golf course to take in allllll the resort has to offer. And the CLOSET, O M G. I could have moved in there. I will be saving the photo for inspo in my *dream* closet. It may seem like a silly detail but it makes all the difference when your suitcase isn’t taking up precious space in the room – especially when you have lots of *stuff* traveling with a baby. The bathrooms are stunning as well and the Red Flower bathroom products smell delicious.

THE POOL

If this T-Shaped infinity pool doesn’t convince you to book a visit or add Keswick to your bucket list, we must have different taste hehe. This infinity pool is the best I have ever seen! It is the perfect place to catch some rays during the day and enjoy a cocktail beside in the evening and instantly transports you from your current reality. These photos should tell you all you need to know! PLUS, The fact that we were able to enjoy it with a baby girl who is unsure about water should say a lot. Don’t worry, it is heated in the cooler months!

There is also a luxury spa on the property that I will for sure be checking out next time! This time my very sweet, fussy baby made things a little complicated But I have heard only good things. And who doesn’t love a spa day?

MARIGOLD BY JEAN-GEORGES

If you aren’t familiar with famous chef Jean-Georges, now you will be! He is a French chef with restaurants all over the world and we are oh so lucky to have one in our backyard. He is known for being one of the best in the biz. His culinary expertise shines through as the entire meal is an *experience* You MUST start with the Crispy Sushi at Marigold, it is delish. Then get the Warm Shrimp salad. I also got the fried rice which seems simple but wow it was NOT. And John got the lamb and said it was fantastic too.

The bar, seen above, is the centerpiece to the restaurant and I look forward to coming back sans baby some day to pony up for a cocktail and apps with Johnny or my girls.

The vibe from the second you pull up to the front instantly transports you and you feel like you are in Europe on a luxury vacation. The whole property is carefully curated to make you feel that way throughout your stay!

If you aren’t local to Virginia like we are, don’t worry, there would be PLENTY for you to do to make an entire vacation of it. Did you know Virginia is home to hundreds of wineries? A few favorites are nearby (Keswick, Blenheim, Jefferson, Trump). Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is just down the road and Charlottesville is home to some of my favorite restaurants and of course, my alma mater University of Virginia.

Life with Olive through our month milestone photos.

Oh, what a joy it has been to be the mom to this little miracle baby girl. If you’ve been around here for a while, you know about our journey to Olive.  Years TTC and then going through IVF was the hardest thing we have ever done, but BOY was it worth it a million times over! These photos may not seem like anything too interesting and let’s be serious – they are mostly here for me to look back on.

My favorite thing about this is probably watching her hair grow. SO CRAZY.

ONE MONTH WITH OLIVE <3

wearing the cutest magnetic me gown. we looooooved these when she was a newborn. so soft and made diaper changes sooo easy. this is the outfit she came home from the hospital in, too, which makes it even more special.

SMILING AT TWO MONTHS <3

I ordered this personalized onesie for Olive off of Etsy and was hoping to take her first photos in the hospital in it. BUT, since she was in the NICU and things went a little differently than expected, we didn’t end up getting those photos! So I wanted to use it here. It was real soft and real cute. One of those things it was really hard to put away when she outgrew it.

OLIVE AT THREE MONTHS OLD <3 SITTING UP (kinda)

I remember taking this and propping her up, with her still being pretty wobbly. I had one hand on the chair to make sure she was stable. GOSH, seems like yesterday.  And we loooooooved this Roller Rabbit ‘fit from my friend Liz. She wore it for a while and watching the next few months in photos is a real flashback.

FOUR MONTHS OLD <3 

Olive was NOT having it for this day. I was trying to keep her attention with the rattle and she was majorly teething, so she wouldn’t take it out of her mouth. For some reason, I really loved this photo and once I got it, that was the one. Perfectly captures who she was at that time.

SIX PRECIOUS MONTHS OF OLIVE <3 

Funny thing about the 6 month photos! We got her all dressed, took the photos (see photo at the top of the post) and then afterwards realized we forgot the 6 month card. So we had to do it again the next day. But gosh, she is just the cutest thing in all the photos! The little toes. And the little outfit.

SEVEN MONTHS WITH OUR GIRL ON THE GO <3

It is getting harder and harder to keep Olive still for these photos! At 7 months old her personality is coming out and she is the sweetest, smiliest, most fun girly.  She is giving us a hard time with her sleep, so luckily she’s cute   Her hair is getting so long that we pretty much have to put the bows in her hair each day. Here are our favorite bows that come in a giant pack and are real affordable from Amazon.

There are SO many suggestions for things that you need before your baby comes. All babies are different and all moms are different but we all want to be prepared, so we register for all of it. I was definitely guilty of this! I thought if I had all the things that would make this giant life change easier.  And it some ways it did, and some ways it didn’t. It certainly didn’t hurt. But there were definitely lots of things we never used because they just didn’t fit with our needs.

SO, I thought I would just highlight a few things that we registered for, got and used a lot in the first three months.  Again, these are my personal experiences and opinions but hopefully they are a helpful for you!

BOPPY! 

The boppy is one of those things you either receive as a hand-me-down or you definitely have on your registry! It is meant for different uses as your baby grows and starts out as a *nursing pillow* Personally, I didn’t really use it when nursing, but we did use it just as a little lounger on our lap to give our arms a rest. John particularly loved using it this way! Then, as they grow you can use it for tummy time, help to learn to sit up and lounge once they can sit up. Definitely worth having.  Our rainbow Boppy Cover.

DIAPER CADDY

We have 2 diaper caddies in our house. One in our bedroom for late night / early morning diaper changes and one downstairs.  Both are stacked with the essentials so you don’t have to wonder where the wipes are, where you can find those burp cloths that keep disappearing, etc.  They are also GREAT for travel. If you are going somewhere via car you can just fill it full and take it with you! We did this when we went to the beach, the Homestead and to my sisters when Olive was a newborn. Here are a few caddies & the essentials I like to keep in it.

UPPABABY STROLLER SYSTEM

We chose to register for the Uppababy Cruz Stroller and Mesa Car Seat. The Cruz is the smaller stroller (Vista is the larger) and since I usually have to get in a car to go for a walk, I wanted something a little smaller.  The real question is: Is Uppababy worth it? My experience: YES. The car seat is manageable, easy to put in the car on its base and you can use it with the stroller making everything just that much easier.  I don’t really have experience with any others except from our initial research but what I can tell you is this: WE LOVE OUR UPPABABY CRUZ V 2 & MESA CAR SEAT. period. My mom has the Vista and we love that too.

BABY BJORN BOUNCER

I didn’t see how this could possibly be worth its price tag, but boy was I wrong. Babies just LOVE this bouncer. SO simple yet effective. A must.

FRESHLY PICKED SWADDLE

OH, the swaddle days! How I miss them! Everything seemed easier then. We tried a bunch of different swaddles and when Olive slept through the night the first time in this Freshly Picked Swaddle that was it. It was the only one we used until she *busted out* of it and we had to stop.  It is so easy to use and I have only heard good things from other friends who have tried it too!

I* In case you missed my love letter to LAKE at Christmas time *

I am just absolutely swooooooning over the LAKE Pajamas Valentine’s Day Collection! The lips and the hearts are just too adorable.  LAKE’s super soft PIMA Cotton pjs have become a staple in our house ever since my best friend gave me a pair during pregnancy! We wore them over Christmas as a family (even John had them) and I just think their mommy and me sets too sweet.

I went for the Poplin nightgown for this collection since I have a good number of the sets and it is breathable and cooling and chic. Honestly, it is kind of out of character for me but my style has changed since Olive was born! I’m a sap. I mean, the kisses! It comes in the heart print, too, and both come with matching sets for the little ones. Cath even got the kisses for Phoenix too and I gotta say they are ADORABLE for little boys.

Because I have a little baby Olive napping in my arms right now, I will keep it short and sweet but trust me when I say that any purchase from LAKE is money well spent. Every pair I have is worth the price!

Olive Rebecca Piersol was born on July 29, 2022 and here is her birth story.

I am sitting here at my desk, with Olive asleep in the carrier and it is surprising and not surprising at the same time that it took me 3 months to get this written out. Life is so completely and utterly different and beautiful and hard all at the same time, everyday. BUT ANYWAYS LETS GET TO THE STORY!

On my due date, July 27th, we were scheduled to go in at 4 pm to check in for my induction.  Even though baby Olive wasn’t showing any signs of making her appearance, I was getting anxious and because some doctors recommend inducing IVF babies, I figured we should go ahead and get the ball rolling. We called at 3:30 to make sure they would be ready for us at 4 and they said, no, call back at 8. BOY, did those 4 and a half hours CRAWL by.  (Obviously I made a tiktok) When we called at 8, they said to go ahead and come in. So we got all packed up and headed in. EEK!

We got all checked in at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital here in Richmond and set up in our room and just as I suspected, I wasn’t dilated or ANYTHING.  I think I was having some light contractions but nothing natural was progressing yet. So, that night they gave me a Miso /Cytotec pill to try to move the process along.  We ate a gourmet dinner in our room and watched some Inventing Anna lol. They continued to monitor me through the night but I made very little progression so they gave me another Miso pill in the early morning. That morning, my OBGYN came to see me first thing to get a plan for the day since the progress was so slow. I was dilated a little bit and contractions were happening regularly but everything was just going s o o o o s l o o w l y.

Around lunch time, I was only 1 cm dilated so when my doctor came back by to check on me, she decided to put in the balloon to help get me dilated. THIS WAS THE MOST PAINFUL PART OF MY BIRTH STORY. Apparently, the positioning of my cervix was not “normal” and she had trouble getting in the balloon.  So much so that she almost gave up because I was in so much pain. Now, I had friends who said they got some heavy duty pain meds for the balloon, I DID NOT.  We had to shift my body around in painful ways in order to FINALLY get the balloon in.  Once it was in, we started the Pitocin and the contractions started to really hurt. They hurt so bad that they couldn’t inflate the balloon all the way.  After giving me some low key pain meds, the nurse asked if I was planning on getting an epidural for the birth. I said YES and she said I should go ahead and get it now.  I just checked our family text thread, and the epidural was around 4pm.

So, they cranked the Pitocin after that and at 5 cm, around 6:30 they broke my water. I was all doped up with the Epidural so I couldn’t really feel that.  Labor continued to progress and around 10pm I was still only 6-7 cm so they told us to get some rest. I was feeling seriously nauseous and was having trouble laying down, so I slept sitting up in the “throne position” until around midnight. Sometime in there, I got a re-up on the epidural because the contractions were more than just noticeable, but John and I can’t agree on when that time was, lol. At the midnight check, they predicted it would be about 4 more hours. Sure enough, they checked at 2 and I was almost 9 cm.

At 4 am, they woke me up, prepped the room and it was GO-TIME.

I wish you could hear John tell the next part – maybe one day I’ll get around to making a v-log. They woke John up at 4:10 and told him it was time! He was groggy from sleep, didn’t have his glasses on and had to go to the bathroom. If you know John, of course he did.  They asked him if he wanted to hold one of my legs and he groggily replied “Sure!” SO, we waited through another contraction so that he could go pee (truly), then it was time.  John held one of my legs, the nurse held the other, and I pushed for 30 minutes and Olive made her grand appearance at 4:58 am.  The nurse and the hospitalist OBGYN were amazing. John was amazing.  The *pushing* with an epidural is the most bizarre feeling and it was HARD, but I did it with the help of everyone in the room and the pure excitement to meet my daughter.

I always thought I would give birth to a tiny baby, but our full-term little miracle was 8 lbz 1 oz and 20.9 cm long.  John cut the cord and we enjoyed an hour’s worth of uninterrupted snuggles before we told our families.  I will never forget those moments.  We were in that hospital room for over 36 hours, and I didn’t see the light of day but boy was it worth it.  Clearly, Olive wasn’t quite ready to enter the world upon our decision to induce, but hey, she made it.

7 hours after she was born, when we were up in the recovery unit, we got the Coombs Positive Diagnosis.  That is a whole blog post in and of itself, but basically, she was born with major jaundice and high bilirubin levels and had to be taken to the NICU. It was the best morning ever followed by the hardest night ever.  She spent 3 days in the excellent care of the NICU before we could take her home.

Those days were so hard, but holding her in my arms as we speak, I am just grateful for the excellent care to get her home safe and sound.  There’s lots of sweet Olive content over on instagram, so if you aren’t following yet, head on over there for more.

ICYMI: I reviewed six pieces from the SKIMS Cotton Collection during my pregnancy. This was my first experience with SKIMS and it truly lived up to my expectations. YET AGAIN, they lived up to the hype.  The website boasts that this collection is buttery soft and each piece stretches up to twice their size.  When they say buttery soft, they mean buttery soft.  It almost feels like you aren’t wearing anything.  For me, in my postpartum body, I definitely needed the bras and underwear to be extra stretchy since my size is fluctuating so this collection was perfect.

FITS EVERYBODY FULL BRIEF – move over postpartum underwear – these are so comfy and the full coverage is very necessary right now

FITS EVERYBODY SUPER CROPPED T-SHIRT – i have been wearing this as a top during the transitional fall weather and loving it. It’s breathable and fits perfectly over my fave bralettes.

FITS EVERYBODY BIKE SHORT – when you don’t want to walk around the house in your underwear!

FITS EVERYBODY HIGH NECK BRA – great for working out, if i were doing that right now lol. Comfy, just like everything else!

FITS EVERYBODY SCOOP NECK BRA – super comfortable while also providing great coverage! Great for those who don’t like a constricting bra.

FITS EVERYBODY BANDEAU BRA – because it had been a while since i bought a bandeau and they were all wayyyyy too small, lol! This one is stretchy and actually stays up.

FITS EVERYBODY SLIP DRESS – again – when you don’t want to walk around in your underwear! Also, If you wanna look and FEEL sexy.
