Late summer getaway in Corolla, NC

Catherine has been taking full advantage of her summer at her family’s beach house in the Outer Banks and to say I have been jealous of all of her weekends away is an understatement! Phoenix is growing into the cutest little beach babe and I was so thrilled to be able to spend a weekend at the beach with these two.

Our September trips in the past meant New York Fashion Week, events, shows, photo shoots and either air or train travel. Sure, we miss the energy of the city, but I think I speak for both of us when I say that our lives have changed for the better since the arrival of Phoenix and Catherine’s motherhood adventure. Let’s be clear, we still know how to have fun!! Beach days, bare feet and beer gardens made for a much needed girls weekend away.

Some things never change…

Their house is in Corolla, which means you have to drive through Southern Shores and Duck to get farther up the island. Pro tip: whatever you do, do not plan to arrive between 11-4. The island is one road and you can get stuck for hours if you come around check-in time or leave around check-out time (especially on the weekends). We woke up at 4am in Richmond and made the trip in about 3 1/2 hours, which is as good as it gets!

We were lucky enough to have some of Catherine’s siblings there (remember, she is the oldest of 9) to help with Phoenix so we could get in a nice 3 mile stroll down beautiful Duck Rd. Ha! No, but really, it was good to get a little movement in before a very windy / foamy day on the beach.

I discovered Might Swell Seltzers when John and I were in Emerald Isle and was so bummed that they aren’t available in Virginia yet. I was thrilled to find out that they had them in OBX and we bought a few extra 12 packs to bring back with us. Dear Mighty Swell, Virginia needs you!

And Whispering Angel is always a go-to when we want to “splurge” on a good rose.

We ventured a few miles down the road to the Beer Garden which is the cutest little outdoor space. We drank delicious summer beers & Phoenix enjoyed all the people watching. Another must-visit spot near Corolla is Sunset Grill for sunset cocktails, obviously!

Obviously, we had no shortage of Turkish Towels and Catherine especially loves our Medet style for Phoenix. It is perfect for breast-feeding and napping on the beach, because of how lightweight and breathable it is!
