Notes on Body Positivity from Reb

a friendly reminder that there are imperfections behind every instagram post and every blog post and alllll the beautiful photos.

When I received this set and another in the mail from Stronger a few weeks back, I tried them on and immediately felt BLAH. I do NOT look like all the other girls on the Stronger instagram page and website in these sets. I have a weird, short torso (remember this) and I’ve got a little extra love in some places that don’t look that great in this set. BUT, I decided to roll the dice and see how it looked in my shoot with Halle. After all, this set perfectly matched the color scheme for the shoot.

While we were shooting, I definitely did not feel my most confident and quickly rolled thru these shots in order to get through to the good stuff. When I got the photos back from Halle, at first I was upset and a little embarrassed. The sitting pose was nottttt flattering when it came to my stomach and the way the shirt rolled into the leggings and so on. I thought I could not possibly share these with the brand, they would straight up reject them.

Neutral Sweater Dresses To Transition to Spring

everyone should have a neutral sweater dress in their closet

the crystal press knit dress

I was making a reel over on my personal instagram account as part of a style share with some ladies (hi Laura Leigh!) && thought I might as well revisit this dress and link up some new favorites! If you keep scrolling, you’ll find this same dress in photos from 2 years ago (blonde hair!), which goes to show, that this and a few other neutral dresses are truly a staple in my closet. Just so cozy and if you stick with neutral colors they are perfect for any occasion.

Style Inspiration for Layered Looks

photos: Halle Kennon, Wild Heart Creative

It’s been a hot minute since we had an outfit or styling post on here! It has been a bit harder to keep up with this kind of content, not only during quarantine but also as we are both juggling hectic schedules, trying to arrange photos with photographers, babysitters etc! BUT HERE WE ARE! WE DID IT!

Once again, we ended up not necessarily “twinning” but wearing outfits that could both fit with the same theme : keeping outfits interesting using layers! I chose to give the sweater vest another go, and Catherine layered this hanky panky turtleneck not only with her Gucci tee, but with a sequin duster on top.

If you are like us, you have been living in boring loungewear, sweat suits and pajamas for almost a year now, so when you have the chance to get dressed you want to make things interesting!

I have been playing around with the layered sweater vest (or knit tank) look for a little while now, and while it isn’t always the most flattering thing on my body at all times, I think it looks cool 🙂 It adds dimension to an otherwise boring look. And I don’t mean basic, because you know I love using simple basic pieces to create an interesting look. AKA, A shirt dress + sweater vest = combined textures party.

Cath knows how to really jazz up a look, we know that! She pulled the double layering with the lace turtleneck and sequin duster for these photos and I loved both. I loooove the way the sequin duster looks especially IRL, but the lace turtleneck really made this look IMO! Also, who knew that Hanky Panky made turtlenecks? They are of course sold out everywhere (we still could find the body suit), but we have rounded up some other ideas for layering your looks as we transition from winter into spring!

Think bodysuits, dusters, long cardigans and fun textures.

Valentine’s Day Style: The Sequins Edit

If there is anything to make you feel like celebrating, it is sequin pieces, right?

Like I said in our last post, about Valentine’s Day dresses, I think we could all use an excuse to celebrate these days! The winter months can be so dreary, especially if you are feeling truly stuck at home. Enter: this cheesy Hallmark Holiday. If you are like us, you tend to not make a big deal about Valentine’s Day, but this year it feels like we need to celebrate everything, no matter how big or small.

Nothing says celebration quite like SEQUINS!

Catherine has been rocking some seriously amazing sequin ‘fits lately which totally inspired this post. She has always been the sequin queen, but with the longline sequin blazer she’s been rocking in a few of her IG posts, I felt that sequin pieces needed their own moment to shine. (hehe) So I’ve rounded up some pretty affordable sequin options for you to rock as you wish! Whether you are having a girls night via zoom or celebrating with a signification other, getting dressed up always makes a gal feel good.

How To Style Faux Leather Shorts

I have been sharing some of my favorite fall outfit ideas over on my personal blog, but this look is just too good not to share here too! (ICYMI here are the first two  posts: Amazon Dress & Marc Fisher Boots // Spanx, Sweater, Boots) I have to admit, I was wary about the paper bag faux leather shorts trend but decided to give it a shot. When I saw that J.ING had a pair, I knew I had to try them and create a fun look around the trendy piece.

*the shorts pictured are now sold out but here are similar styles*

You guys know I’m a big fan of J.ING ever since I started working with them last year and trust them for my elevated basics. All of their pieces feel like luxury items without the designer prices and you gotta appreciate that.  I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the shorts on with my latest J.ING blouse. I felt a little funny at first, tbh, but I loved how they looked. I wanted to show off the top of the shorts so I decided to wear the blouse unbuttoned and a favorite tank top. To make the outfit even more interesting, I paired the J.ING pieces with these croc inspired Nine West boots to give the look some dimension. (more…)

Spotlight on: Free City Sweatpants

I thought I had grown out of my complete and utter obsession with being Jessica Simpson until this outfit – shot with Halle Kennon for The Crystal Press w Reb – with Free City sweatpants from SHOPBOP happened.

Since the debut of the MTV show Newlyweds in 2003 – like most of America – I have been a Jessica Simpson fan. I remember scanning outlets (the internet, tabloids, magazines) for every detail of her outfits on and off camera and was heavily influenced by her style. I thought I had grown out of it since the obsession began 17 years ago – but then this outfit happened.

Marc Fisher Friends & Family Sale

the crystal press marc fisher friends and family

You guys know we love Marc Fisher around here and they are currently running their Friends & Family Sale which means 25% off everything! This is a great time to stock up on a new pair of booties for the season. Their boots are honestly my favorite affordable pair on the market and I own at least 5. HIGHLY recommend if you are in the market for a new pair of everyday boots.

Light Layers: Kimonos & Cover-Ups

you don’t have to put away your kimonos and cover-ups just because summer is over.

We LOVE layers. Year Round. No Question.

BUT, layering in the summer can be tricky tricky, especially when it gets super hot and humid, like it has been in Richmond lately. We love to have the option to wear tank tops and shorts, and skirts, but even on the hottest days, we both tend to reach for a top layer.

Reb’s Picks: Black Dresses for Summer

Photos by Halle Kennon

Black dresses on here, to me, the queen of only wearing black, are not ground breaking.

BUT! With each new season, and each new collection that comes out, I have to keep you guys updated on my current faves.  This strapless number I found on ASOS a few weeks ago sold out SO FAST, but I have found plenty of great options out there on Shopbop, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, J.ING & H&M. From slinky LBDs to flowy maxis and midis in between, I have found 20 great options for you guys. (more…)

Anine Bing Tees + Sweats : The Perfect Fall Combo

graphic tee and sweats

Photos by Halle Kennon

When we were preparing for our first post lock down shoot with Halle, I ordered a few new pieces of clothing, with new outfits in mind. HOWEVER, I also knew that I wanted to capture this Anine Bing tee that has been on repeat over the past few months.  When I saw these joggers, I knew they would create the perfect look. And by the perfect look I mean, a mix between #quarantine lounge wear and street style.  Something I am actually wearing regularly. Usually, when I have these grand ideas for outfits, especially for photo shoots with Catherine, I order the pieces and the outfit doesn’t turn out exactly how I envisioned it.  THIS TIME THOUGH: it actually worked. The addition of the boots dresses up the look, but if you are working at home, slippers would totally work too.

I was so happy with the way this look turned out and even though it was a little hot for sweatpants outside when we shot these photos, the days are getting cooler, plus most of us are working inside (at home or safely back to work).  If you follow along with me on IG, you know that I have been a huge fan of Anine Bing tees for a while now. Ever since Catherine put me onto them last summer, they are a staple in my closet.  At $99, you are paying a little more for a graphic tee, but I have to say they are 100% worth it.  They are SO SOFT and you get designer quality without having to spend $400. I find myself reaching for one or the other of the ones I own oh so frequently.
