Why I Invest in Designer Brands

This post originally appeared on Sartorial Meanderings in October 2019, but I have updated the links and my favorite designer pieces with more current photos!

OKAY GUYS, LET’S GET RIGHT TO IT.
I have been wanting to write this post for a while, especially because I see so many bloggers out there constantly posting about “dupes.”

When I say “Why I Invest in Luxury Fashion,” I don’t necessarily mean at designer prices.  Lots of my designer pieces are consigned from The Real Real, Tradesy, Poshmark, eBay and my current favorite, Mercari.  What I should really say is that I like to buy quality over quantity.  I realized a few years ago that the number of pairs of shoes or bags that I bought was absurd in comparison to how long they lasted me. I was spending hundreds of dollars a year on pieces that simply wouldn’t last. I thought I was being savvy by shopping from fast fashion retailers, but in reality I was spending the same amount of money on all of these crappy items as I would on a few quality, designer pieces. So that’s when I bought my first used Louis Vuitton off of Tradesy and asked for Gucci Slides for my birthday. (pictured below)

We have entered the final countdown to NYFW and in a mere 48 hours we will be boarding a plane, headed toward America’s favorite Fashion City.  The thought of packing right now is making my head spin, but I know that when our bags are packed and we are touching down at JFK, it will all be worth it.

VETTA Capsule Collection

“So you can look good by doing good” – VETTAVETTA 1

Last spring, a friend tagged me on Facebook about a Kickstarter project that two girls, Cara Bartlett + Vanessa vanZyl, were attempting to fund and it caught my eye immediately! As half of a duo trying to “make it” in the fashion world, I really appreciated what the girls were doing with their VETTA Capsule collection. Not only does their minimalistic and perfectly chic collection perfectly fit our aesthetic, but the main goal of VETTA is to create eco-friendly clothing. (more…)

white on white 2.0

white 2white 1When I got these Sam Edelman Fringe booties from Shoebox last week, I knew I wanted to recreate this all-white w black shoes winter look from earlier this year in New York. I have no shame in admitting that these are the same white jeans from the February get-up, as they are a staple in my wardrobe along w my trusty Louis Sully bag. So, here we have the its-almost-fall-so-I-can-wear-booties version of the white on white plus black thing.

(Side note: Yes I know, summer is coming to an end and its not quite labor day yet but for the record the no white after Labor Day rule has been thrown out the window with many other fashion faux-pas that I do not agree with).

t shirt maxi dressOver the course of the summer, I have been dabbling in Marie Kondo’s book “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” in an attempt to get my room & wardrobe organized once and for all (aka I am a recovering hoarder.) Marie’s solution to this conundrum consists of making sure everything I own brings joy & has a designated place in my abode. As you can imagine, applying this principle is quite challenging when dealing with all things related to my wardrobe. I have come across so many pieces of clothing that I haven’t worn in what feels like forever and I almost never can find it in me to get rid of these pieces despite my attempts to learn this Japanese organization method. Instead, I do the complete opposite of what Marie Kondo intended by adding my lost and found collection into the mix of my everyday attire with a different style. By different, I don’t mean anything strikingly profound. I simply mean I tie a knot somewhere in said piece of clothing. My mantra for the summer should have been “tie a knot in it” because this has come in handy countless times over the past couple months. My point is knots are a great way to change up something you already own for multiple wears. Shop this maxi from old faithful Forever 21 below and pick up these Belle by Sigerson Morrison flats at the Shoebox in RVA!

PS I’m not giving up on this organization method! Stay tuned for future progress notes on my tidying project.

in-bloom-in bloom slip rva

Okay – immediate disclaimer – this “top” is totally a nightgown.  As part of my bachelorette party I had a lingerie shower (yes, basic I know) and got some bomb ass things. I am a bralette & nightgown girl and my bridesmaids totally nailed it (shoutout to all of you). This amazing in bloom nightgown was from my sister / maid of honor and I am totally in love with it. I have to admit that when I first opened it I knew I could totally rock it outside of my bedroom / living room.  I am all for wearing things in a totally different context than what they were designed for, so thanks for perpetuating my habit sis!  Also along similar lines (breaking all fashion rules) – I am always wearing black & brown together so these Frye booties were the perfect compliment to the slip.

cream on white on snowy nyc

These are definitely some of our favorite photos to date! After brunching in the Lower East Side (see part 1 of our travel post for deets), we wandered around and found these amazing iron church gates and had to seize the moment! Reb found this great top the day before, shopping on 5th ave at Zara and decided to go for the cream-on-white-on-snow look for our Sunday Funday in the city.
