Spotlight on: Maven Made

We have said it before, but we will say it again >> Richmond is home to so many amazing local artists, vendors and shops.  One of our favorites in town is Maven Made – an all natural skincare + wellness brand run by Richmond girl boss Bethany.  I have been trying out the three products that she shared with us and I am obsessed.  We have tried countless facial serums and rosewater facial sprays over the years – as they are products we cannot live without- and I can honestly say that her Rosewater Wondermist and Facial Serum are the best of the best. The addition of lavender in the Rosewater facial mist is such a great added bonus, and is so incredibly refreshing!  I think its safe to say I’m hooked. Additionally, as a migraine sufferer, the headache and tension remedy has been a serious blessing.  I don’t leave home without it!

What inspired you to create Maven Made? My own personal skin issues was the catalyst for Maven Made. I had a long struggle with cystic acne + overly oily skin, in 2013, instead of going in for another round of Accutane, I listened to my intuition + turned in the other direction. I started learning about how vitamins, nutrition + oils could help my skin. I concocted the Facial Serum (same one sold today) + my skin transformed. I wanted to share the magic of my discovery with others so Maven Made was launched with some other core products in 2014.

What is some advice to give to other women who are thinking of starting their own company? Ask for what you feel you deserve! In every aspect. From the very beginning, don’t take less than what you feel your value truly is, set boundaries + be okay with saying no. These are things I’m actively working on now + it can be really challenging – I feel when many of us start a business, we want our products, services + image to be well received… with everyone. Later, (if you’re still truly aligned with your business) you discover where this “please all” mindset can carve room for being taken advantage of or not making the revenue you realize you’re so worthy of. That’s time to restructure!

I also think one of the pitfalls of being a woman + starting your own business is giving into the normalized pressure to compare yourself to another women, their business + their social media perception. That’s why I have a love hate relationship with social media, I don’t want to get caught up in fake projections + having the constant need to gain followers. More personal thoughts on it here.

What is your favorite thing about being a small business in Richmond, VA? The feeling of this community of boss babes, makers + entrepreneurs is incredibly co-creative. I feel so bonded with other small businesses because I don’t feel like there’s a lot of ego, jealously or resentment. I’m able to ask advise, give advise + have “holy shit” moments with so many people that understand the struggles + joys of being a small businesses. The support + friendships are amazing.

What is your standard beauty routine?  I’m digging dry brushing right now. I dry brush right before I step into the shower + apply a body oil made with grapeseed, black pepper + grapefruit after I shower. It all helps boost lymphatic function (ridding toxins), smoothes + reduces appearance of cellulite. My go-to beauty items are the Maven Made Facial Serum, C & C Co (Asheville, NC based) underarm balm + Himalaya Neem & Tumeric Face Wash. Also, filling my water bottle with filtered water + a drop of lemon essential oil for the day is a standard morning ritual.
