Reb’s Tips: Why I Buy Designer

OKAY GUYS, LET’S GET RIGHT TO IT. I have been wanting to write this post for a while, especially because I see so many bloggers out there constantly posting about “dupes.”

When I say “Why I buy designer,” I don’t necessarily mean at designer prices.  Lots of my designer pieces are consigned from The Real Real, Tradesy, Poshmark and eBay.  What I should really say is that I like to buy quality over quantity.  I realized a few years ago that the number of pairs of shoes or bags that I bought was absurd in comparison to how long they lasted me. I was spending hundreds of dollars a year on pieces that simply wouldn’t last. I thought I was being savvy by shopping from fast fashion retailers, but in reality I was spending the same amount of money on all of these crappy items as I would on a few quality, designer pieces. So that’s when I bought my first used Louis Vuitton off of Tradesy (pictured above) and asked for Gucci Slides for my birthday. (pictured below)

Spotlight On: Stripes, Again

the crystal press stripes

Before I started writing this post, I searched “stripes” on our blog to see just how many times we have written about stripes over the years. Turns out its A LOT. (Rainbow Stripes, Twinning In Stripes, Stripe Dresses etc). However, it has been over a year since they got their own dedicated post, so it’s about time to revisit!

For two girls that tend to stick to neutral palette { except for our brief moment with previously mentioned rainbow stripes last fall } stripes are a perfect way to make our looks interesting. We are fans of everything from bold striped pants that make a serious statement, to simple striped sweaters for everyday wear during the fall and winter months. Right now I’ve got my eye on this Monki set.

Spotlight on: Chunky Knits

It looks like we have finally put summer in our rear view mirror.

Ok, don’t get us wrong. Summer is probably our favorite season. However, Once October hits, we are ready freddy for fall temps. It has been a dreary day here in RVA and with a chill in the air, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t perfectly content. And while we aren’t ready for snow days per se, we are happy to get into all things fall (read: basic). Catherine discovered a Pumpkin Spice Latte version of one of our favorite cold brews and I am ready for my husband to call up our “wood guy” to prepare for fireplace season. Ya hear that, Johnny?

Matching Set: Cow Print

Does this outfit make me look like a Chik Fil A Commercial?

As we were walking through Scott’s Addition, a local favorite spot to take photos, Catherine & Kenzi told me that I “should wear that to get free Chik Fil A.”  I started cracking up, because the thought hadn’t crossed my mind, even when realizing I was wearing a cow print set.  There’s nothing quite like great friends to tell you the truth! 3 Ways to Dress Up Denim

the crystal press fashion blog

Denim tends to fall on the more casual side of dressing but with a few tweaks and accessories, you can dress up your denim for your next occasion in no time. There is nothing better than seeing a classic piece like denim jeans or denim jean shorts in a new light!

dress denim how to blog

My favorite way to dress up denim is with a fierce blazer. What makes a blazer fierce? I love a blazer that is tailored for a slim fit but doesn’t look tight. I also prefer a longline lapel with a minimal amount of buttons like this white one from the ASOS Design line. If you are looking for an investment piece, blazers are a great investment to make because you will wear them for years to come. Balmain, anyone?

Another great way to dress up denim is with a pair of statement heels. I recently spotted Hailey Bieber (her style is amazing, am I right? Don’t get me started on her hubby L O L ) dressing up her denim ensemble with a pair of neon heels and I have never seen something look so RIGHT. Whether you are in the mood for a neon pop of color like Hailey or a metallic pop like moi, a pair of statement heels is a great way to elevate your denim look.

Last but not least, another way to dress up your denim is with lace texture. I love this black hat because it has a ribbon around it that creates a lace effect. The silk shirt I am wearing also has lace detailing throughout so it makes the top look dressier, especially at first glance. Even if lace isn’t your thing, find a texture that Is and use that to elevate your denim!

I hope you found some ways to dress up your favorite pair of denim anything – I know it is one of my favorite ways to make an outfit.

How To Style a Body Suit 4 Ways

TBH, when I first ordered this bodysuit for a shoot with Kenzi & Cath, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it.  The whole idea of a body suit sounded uncomfortable and not very practical but I fell in love the first time I tried it on.  You guys saw it in the last post with my favorite pair of pants & I got so many comments about the body suit that I took to IG TV with 4 new ways to style it.  I was overwhelmed with your responses on the ‘gram so I decided to share the looks here as well!

{ Did I mention it’s now on sale for $32?!}

Let me know which is your favorite in the comments below!

When I polled you guys over on IG TV, everyone seemed to like the jeans look the best! I guess I just wasn’t thinking it was jeans weather right now, and honestly, I have been getting farther away from jeans and closer to loose fitting pants like the culottes in my last post! However, after hearing all of your feedback, I think once the cooler temps hit, I’ll be sharing more ways to style my favorite mom jeans with you guys.

~ SHOP THE JEANS LOOK ~

I pretty much style any new top with jean shorts, so nothing that new here! But this is a great casual weekend look, topped off with the classic white Vans.

Originally, this was my favorite look when I set up the IG TV poll, but like I said, you guys have me questioning that opinion lolol.  I have been wearing these biker shorts on repeat ever since they landed on my door step and whaddya know, I actually wore them when John and I took a nice bike ride down in South Beach! IMO biker shorts are a must this summer.

I didn’t try this look on before I started filming my IG TV video and when I first put it on I was like “wow, this doesn’t work at all.”  But then I rearranged where the bodysuit fell & had to tug at the dress lining and I think its actually A-OK! I scored this mini dress from Zara on major sale, but ASOS has some great options too.  The black mini should definitely be a closet staple, especially in the summer! Make it interesting by layering with tees or a bodysuit!

Reb’s Pick of The Month: Midi Skirts

If you’ve been following along with me over on my Sartorial Meanderings for the past few months, this midi skirt is NOT new to you. I’ve had it for a few months now and have been consistently wearing it IRL and on the blog. That’s why we like versatile pieces right? I featured it in two different “how to style” series on my IG TV that also ended up here. Once with a black button down and most recently with my Grateful Dead tee.  Now that I’m thinking of it – I reckon that might be the next piece that I show how to style over on good old instagram! I used to shy away from skirts because I found them to be generally uncomfortable but ever since the midi length came back into style I’ve found myself eyeing quite a few online. They come in all styles, prints & colors and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, which is why I love ’em.  Clearly, I like to pair them with graphic tees but if you’re a crop top gal or more of a blouse lover, then you do you.

So! I’ve rounded up a few that I have been coveting from some sites like Free People, Revolve & ASOS and these are by no means all that’s out there.  The midi skirt world is your oyster if you will.  If you’re into this style, there are plentyyyy of options out there for you! Take a walk on the wild side with a leopard print, or stay classic with just plain black. Let me know which ones you are into in the comments below! Happy shopping xx

Styling Boots for Summer

If anyone ever said that you should put your boots & booties away during the summer, they were straight up wrong. We’re sorry if you feel led astray, but the truth of the matter is that you can rock your booties year round. Yes, yes, we love our sandals & heels, slides and sneaks but one thing we have in common is that we both tend to reach for our boots year round. They just have a way of elevating your look in a way that some summer flats just don’t.

Styling Statement Dresses for Summer

Dresses for summer – not exactly groundbreaking or surprising, we know.

The longer we have been at this, the easier it is to admit that while our style might change a little here and there – we’ve been pretty consistent in the last year or so. You can find us wearing lots of black & white, stripes, with pops of red and of course some statement pieces sprinkled in here and there. There’s nothing wrong with consistency right? ( See our post on the Tezza x INSPR collection as an example )
